Who this route suits
This is a starting point for a first Jaipur visit focused on architecture, palaces and markets. Allow two full days and an overnight stay in the city. A half-day containing a train or flight should remain a travel day. Adjust the order after choosing your accommodation and dates. These are editorial planning suggestions based on desk research, rather than a claim of a personal visit.
Rajasthan Tourism places Amer about 11 km from Jaipur. Keeping Amer and the old city on separate days avoids repeatedly crossing the city. Choose two main stops for each day before buying multiple tickets. Additional sights are options to use only when your time and energy allow.
Day 1 · Slow down in the old city
Begin around Hawa Mahal. Watch traffic when photographing the facade from across the road. If you want to enter, confirm the current ticket and opening arrangements; viewing the exterior and exploring inside need different amounts of time. Continue to Jantar Mantar. If understanding the instruments matters to you, ask about an authorised guide and agree the price first.
Plan a seated lunch and a real break. Afterwards choose City Palace or an unhurried market walk rather than treating both as compulsory. Check the price, item and return terms before shopping. Decide how to return to your hotel before you are tired. With young children, a short evening can make the following day more enjoyable.
Day 2 · Make Amer the main outing
Put Amer first and allow for slopes, steps and exposed areas. Carry water, comfortable shoes and sun protection. Before hiring transport, agree the total fare, waiting time and meeting point for the return. Check local rules before choosing any activity. An animal ride is not required to follow this itinerary.
On the return, consider a short exterior viewing stop by Jal Mahal. Head back to your accommodation if the group is tired. Adding Nahargarh means extra travel and potentially a late finish; leave it out when you have an evening train. In rain, heat or heavy crowds, removing an optional stop is often more useful than compressing every visit.
Arriving and choosing a base
Compare rail, road and air options from your starting city. Check the precise station or airport, date and arrival time when booking. For late arrivals, confirm hotel check-in and your transfer in advance. Budget separately for the arrival transfer and each sightseeing day. A low room price can lose its advantage when it adds long daily journeys.
Staying near the old city can help with walking, but check vehicle access in narrow lanes. A station-area stay may simplify a departure while adding travel to attractions. Ask about a lift, bathroom arrangements, family occupancy and cancellation terms. Straight-line map distance is a poor substitute for checking the actual route and entrance.
An example budget for two people
For one night and two days, try this exercise: room ₹1,500–3,000; meals ₹1,200–2,000; local transport ₹1,000–2,500; and a self-set entry/activity allowance of ₹1,000–2,000. That is roughly ₹4,700–9,500 for two people. These are illustrative planning allowances, not current hotel, taxi or monument quotations. Travel to Jaipur and shopping are additional.
To reduce costs, check shared or public transport availability and remove one expensive activity. Ticket categories, child concessions and photography charges can differ by venue. Read the official booking page or ask the counter for the complete current amount before paying. Keep some money unallocated for a changed route or an extra transfer.
Family needs and the final check
Ask each venue about steps and entrances if someone has limited mobility. Do not assume every section has step-free access. Confirm where a vehicle can drop you off. Explain Jain food, low-spice requirements or allergies directly to the restaurant. Build a seated break into the middle of the day rather than waiting until someone is exhausted.
Recheck opening days, ticket arrangements and local weather the day before travel. If official pages give inconsistent hours, confirm with the venue. When a sight is closed, a meal, market or rest in the same area may be a better alternative than adding a distant fort. Use the map-search links below to check the current route and correct entrance.
